Heroes of CentralSquare: Katie Copeland

Some heroes wear a badge. Others answer the phone when a payroll system goes down two days before a filing deadline. Both show up when it matters most.

We launched Nominate a Hero to celebrate the people who serve with purpose and make a real impact, whether they work for an agency or for CentralSquare® itself. Katie Copeland was nominated three separate times for the same kind of Hero-Grade™ work. Across all three, the theme was consistent: fast answers, real follow-through, and genuine care.

Each nomination is a reminder of the people behind the scenes keeping teams strong, systems running, and communities supported.

Today, we’re proud to highlight another hero in public service: Katie Copeland. Keep reading to hear her story.

    About Katie

Katie Copeland serves as a Product Support Senior Manager at CentralSquare, powering the payroll and finance support that public agencies count on but rarely think about until something breaks. She helps customers through everything from routine questions to year-end crunches, so paychecks go out on time and tax filings go out right.

Katie was nominated three times by customers who each described the same experience: a fast response and a fix that holds. They describe her as the person who follows up to make sure a solution actually worked. She shows up with patience, clarity, and consistency.

Katie’s responsiveness is what customers mention first, whether that means a same-day answer to a routine question or getting T4s (Canada’s year-end tax slips) out the door on a tight deadline. More than one customer has credited her with making a rocky transition into a new payroll role feel manageable, walking through problems one at a time until confusion turned into confidence.

“I have been lucky in my career to have Katie at my side,” shared one of the customers who nominated her. That’s what Hero-Grade looks like when it happens behind the scenes.

    Q&A with Katie

    1. What inspires you to be Hero-Grade?

“The people I work with and alongside have always been the driving factor in why I do what I do every day. When I can work with a client to get an issue, especially a particularly difficult one, to a resolution, their excitement and happiness are what inspire me to do more. Additionally, if I can work internally with a member of our team to address one of their struggles or questions, the load that it takes off them helps carry me into the next one.”

    2. What are you most proud of in your impact on the public sector?

“At the end of the day, I’m just happy that I could help in some way. In many cases I’ve been in the same situations that they have been, stuck or frustrated (or both), and I know how isolating it can be. Having a friendly face that may not have all the answers but may be able to help put them in touch with the right people can sometimes lift a tremendous weight and make things a little less lonely.”

    3. How do you stay motivated to be Hero-Grade during difficult situations?

“It’s important to remember that the person you’re interacting with in that difficult situation is a person who has a life outside of the issue you’re helping them with. They may have had a bad day, may be frustrated and feeling ignored, or may be under pressure from people around them. Showing them that you understand and want to work together with them to a resolution can help defuse some of that stress. Approaching others with understanding and common ground is extremely important to making progress and turning a difficult situation into a positive one.”

    4. How has teamwork impacted your role?

“Beyond just my own team, I think across CentralSquare, collaboration is invaluable. Every day I work with amazing members of different departments doing things that are maybe outside of their scope because they just want to help. The saying ‘One CentralSquare’ that we often use is what makes our team so great. If we’re all working together, pulling on the same oar, and moving towards a common goal, we can do great things.”

    5. What advice would you give to others who strive to make a meaningful impact in public service?

“This may be simple, but a bit of kindness and care goes a very long way. You can change someone’s entire day or opinion with a positive word or helpful comment. As I mentioned previously, no one has a crystal ball to know what people are going through in their lives, and offering a bit of compassion to someone having a difficult day may make all the difference.”

    6. Looking ahead in 2026, how do you hope to continue serving your community?

“If I can help people through this year as I have up to this point, every day is a success! In 2026 I hope we can all continue to work together to make everyone’s day just a little bit brighter and more positive.”

Nominate the Person Who Always Responds

Katie’s story is a reminder that Hero-Grade work doesn’t always happen on the front lines of a 911 center or in the middle of an emergency call. Sometimes it’s a fast reply during a payroll deadline, or a patient explanation that steadies someone through a stressful year-end. Three different customers noticed, and they each took the time to say so.

Their nominations are what made this spotlight possible. If someone on your team responds quickly, explains the fix, and follows up to make sure it worked, we want to hear about it.
